There’s nothing like the smell of a fresh pot of brewed coffee in the morning, and if you’re like 62 percent of Americans, you’re likely unable to get through your morning without at least one cup. But other than making sure you’re wired for your day ahead, a handful of health benefits come with drinking that bean juice – in proper portions, of course.
Men’s Health recently shared a great post about coffee’s health benefits. It comes with the caveat, though, about proper dosage. As many of us know, caffeine overload is not fun and can come with some severe health consequences. You can still get the benefits, though, without needing to go too wild.
1. Drop In Diabetes Risk
According to one study, people that regularly drink coffee are far less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those that don’t. The reason is that coffee is high in a polyphenol called chlorogenic acid, which has been shown to drop blood sugar concentrations and their absorption into the intestines, leading to the belief of the diabetes-protective effects that were found.
2. Improved Driving Habits
Sadly, drowsy driving is a leading cause of numerous road accidents. A study from the Netherlands discovered that people who drank one cup of caffeinated coffee in the middle of a four-hour-long tedious driving task swerved a lot less, maintained better speeds, and decided their driving was more responsible than those who had decaf.
3. Kidney Stone Risk Decrease
Coffee could also help reduce your risk of one of the worst-known conditions: kidney stones. Another study showed that people who drank coffee were far less likely to develop kidney stones than those who drank it once a week.
Of course, coffee helps you to urinate more, which can help flush your body of any extra calcium and sodium that aids in the build-up of kidney stones. Drinking tea, wine, and beer decreases the risk if coffee isn’t cutting it for you. Just don’t boost your pop consumption (I said this site would have a Midwest touch). A Brigham and Women’s Hospital study found a 23 percent risk increase in kidney stone formation from pop drinking.
4. Less Prone To Forget Things
In addition to reducing your risk of needing sticky notes, those who consumed 200 mg of caffeine were able to recall specific images 24 hours later than participants who didn’t have caffeine as part of another study. The cause of this is caffeine blocks the neurotransmitter adenosine, so it’s unable to inhibit another neurotransmitter called norepinephrine, which plays a crucial role in memory.
5. Decreased Liver Cancer Risk
When it comes to cancer, liver cancer is the second leading cancer that results in death and the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. According to another study, people who drank two cups of coffee per day were 43 percent less likely to develop liver cancer than those who didn’t. According to the researchers, this is due to compounds inside coffee that lower liver enzymes and slow the progression of liver disease. As mentioned above, since coffee can help lower your chances of diabetes, a risk factor for liver cancer and other liver diseases, this can help even more.
